A lawyer only with a microprocessor card
 (08-10-2010)

The Bar is the first law council in Poland to launch new ID cards enabling use of electronic signature. Microprocessor IDs will be obtained by all the practicing lawyers (more than nine thousand), as well as advocate trainees (more than five thousand).

- Introduction of a new card design is the next step to Bar modernization. We are prepared to use the latest electronic communication facilities, including those based on cryptography, but we expect a similar upgrade with our partners in public administration and courts. If this occurs, the communication with lawyers will be even better than before - said Andrzej Michalowski, acting President of the Supreme Bar Council.

The new card will be a multi-functional device useful in lawyers’ daily work. Built-in microprocessor will act as a public key certificates carrier – of both qualified, necessary for the submission of the so-called electronic signature, as well as non-qualified certificates which are applied, for example, in the process of encrypting digital data.

In some cases it may also be used to encrypt messages sent by electronic means. Besides, the data stored in the chip will allow an easy verification that the lawyer is authorized to practice (eg whether he/she is suspended due to conducted disciplinary proceedings).
